Chapter 19

Whoa

True

Keeping my face impassive and my eyes focused was turning out to be an almost impossible task. I looked over Pilar’s head to try to get a glimpse of Lu. I hated the way she had run off with that look of hurt in her eyes, the way we had so quickly gotten into that stupid argument, and for what? I especially hated the way she’d taken Lim’s arm.

Pilar was going on and on…and on. I mean I got it, but she needed to get it too. And back off. This hard sell was getting her nowhere. The Copper Goose hedge fund seemed like my perfect nightmare. But their rep was growing and Pilar was making it out like signing a contract with them would be akin to Aladdin getting a magic lamp with none of the strings. As if I didn’t know about the semi-shady clients with their money hidden in Swiss banks, while they kept up a facade of environmentally friendly and tech portfolios. Still, there were the good parts. Like the huge expense accounts, the money, the fact that I could set Mama up with a low-stress, worry-free retirement. But at what cost?

And of course, that might make you feel a bit uncomfortable, given her family is one of our biggest competitors, but believe me, Thomas Carlisle understands that this is just business.” She took a sip of her drink and continued. “Now, I don’t know if he’s tried to woo you over the years, but if he has, then his offer was obviously not good enough. And if he hasn’t, well, then it’s his fault for not seeing what a diamond you are. Hell, maybe the family just doesn’t know how to spot a gem when it’s right in front of their eyes.”

Pilar was going all out now. And yes, Lu’s father, Mr. Carlisle—“call me Thomas”—had offered me a job with Forty Rise more than once. He’d been at my graduation and told me he’d seen so much of Cole in me as I walked and received my degree. He tried to recruit me then, and twice more along the way over the years. But that was none of Pilar’s business. It was also not something I’d ever shared with Lu.

It was enough that I lived in one of his buildings, though he said I shouldn’t feel guilty since I paid for my unit like everyone else. My
